British Rail wasn't expensive.

But privatisation doesn't work like that. It's a con.

And they failed. The rail infrastructure company was re-nationalised (quietly... don't tell the public that the model failed).

In order to maximise profits, the privatised companies have sacked staff. They want to get rid of the guard on the train, you know, the person that walks up and down, helping people. The companies want "driver-only operation".

You know things are screwed when the Minister for Transport publicly declares that he is "not in charge of the railways".
